joe says "thnx moms"

On this Mother's Day Joe is thankful for all the moms out there, especially his own. (If you happened to graduate from Portland High School in 1940, you probably knew Beatrice Lane. She was a heck of a woman and a heck of a mother!) Joe hopes everyone had a safe Mother's Day and says thanks to all the moms out there!

joe says "kids first"

As a father of three once-young children, Joe often likes to spread awareness about services that are geared towards local youth. One of the more inspiring local non-profits doing such work is the Kids First Center. Kid's First's mission is to minimize the emotional and sometimes physical trauma children experience during the separation and divorce of their parents. Kids First's children's support groups provide a safe place for kids to explore their feelings and learn coping mechanisms with kids who are in a situation similar to their own. On Thursday, May 7th, Kids First is hosting its "Kids First And All That Jazz" Gala at the Westin Portland Harborview in Portland. Fun activities include a raffle, auction, live music and dancing, and more, all for a great cause. Find more about this great event at its website, and more about the organization here. Joe hopes the event is a success, and offers his thanks again to this great organization.

joe says "pso 90th"

Lately Portland has seen a variety of local organizations related to the arts being promoted on the Time & Temp- and here's one more. Joe wants to spread the word about the 90th anniversary of the Portland Symphony Orchestra. Comprised of 82 professional musicians, 40% of them residing in Maine, the PSO is widely regarded as one of the top symphony orchestras of its size in the country. Serving the city of Portland, the state of Maine, and northern New England, the PSO is the largest performing arts organization in our state, and it's celebrating a milestone anniversary. On Saturday, May 2nd, the PSO will be hosting its 90th Anniversary Gala Concert at the Merrill Auditorium. For more information on what's sure to be a wonderful event, click here, and for more information on the PSO, visit the official website.

joe says "love mpbn"

When Joe is on the road he tunes to 90.1 FM, the Maine Public Broadcasting Network (the station number is different depending on your region- find your local station here). Every day, MPBN connects the people of Maine to each other and to the world through the open exchange of information, ideas and cultural content. Tomorrow, April 30th, is MPBN's annual Super Thursday Radio Pledge Drive, when the network will be accepting donations all day. Remember: important local non-profits like MPBN rely on funding from Mainers like you, so please lend them a hand if you can (check out their website to donate), and be sure to tune in for their great programming.

joe says "join mita"

Of the many things that make Maine special, one of Joe's favorites is our dazzling coastline. Like many Mainers, Joe grew up swimming and exploring the coast of our great state, and that's why he's happy to promote the Maine Island Trail Association. The Maine Island Trail is a water trail spanning over 200 islands and coastal sites along the 375 miles of the coast of Maine, and MITA's goal is to establish a model of thoughtful use and volunteer stewardship for the Maine islands that will assure their conservation in a natural state while providing an exceptional recreational asset that is maintained and cared for by the people who use it. On Thursday, April 30th, MITA will be hosting the 2015 Small Boaters' Film Fest and Auction, featuring short films and a silent auction to benefit MITA and the great work they do. Joe hopes the event is a great success. If you're interested in this organization, find more about MITA here and more about the film fest here.

Some of Joe's favorite local charities are those that offer assistance to veterans. Since its inception, the Goodwill Veterans' Fund has assisted nearly 250 veterans in Maine with everything from car repairs including tires, heating fuel and transportation needs. Joe hopes your schedule is clear on Thursday, April 30th from 6-9pm, when Goodwill Industries of Northern New England is hosting its fourth annual Little Black Dress Event at the Ocean Gateway in Portland to raise funds for Goodwill's Veterans Fund. With hors d'Oeuvres provided by Black Tie Catering, a fashion show, a live auction, and a silent auction, this event is sure to be both a good time and a worthwhile cause. Find more about the event here. Joe wants to thank Goodwill for the work they do on behalf of veterans, and hopes the event is a great success.

joe says "bike swap"

Once an avid cyclist himself, Joe is happy to spread the word about the Bicycle Coalition of Maine's Great Maine Bike Swap,  held from 10am-1pm on Sunday, April 26th with bike drop-off from 3-6pm on Saturday, April 25th. The Bike Swap offers a great way to buy used bicycles at an affordable price.  You also can sell the bikes cluttering your garage or basement and turn them into cash. At the swap, you can choose from hundreds of bikes, including hybrids, road bikes, mountain bikes, children's bikes, recumbents and more. To find more about the Bicycle Coalition and the bike swap, check out their website. Joe hopes the event is a great success and that everyone finds the wheels they're looking for.

joe says "pp50 4 29"

From his experience working with thousands of injured Mainers, Joe knows how important quality healthcare can be. Few organizations provide healthcare to more Mainers than Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, which will be celebrating its 50th anniversary on April 29th. Planned Parenthood's health centers provide a wide range of safe, reliable health care - and the majority is preventive, primary care, which helps prevent unintended pregnancies through contraception, reduce the spread of sexually transmitted infections through testing and treatment, and screen for cervical and other cancers. The 50th anniversary celebration will be held on April 29th from 5:30pm to 8:30pm at the Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland. For more information about the event, click here, and to learn more about Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, visit their website. Joe hopes the event is a success and extends his thanks to Planned Parenthood and all health providers who treat Maine women.
