Sorry if this message gives you flashbacks to high school English class, but Joe needs to spread an important Shakespeare-related message! 2016 marks the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. To celebrate more than 400 years of Shakespearean influence on our language and our collective imaginations, the Folger Shakespeare Library has mounted a national tour of the First Folio. The First Folio is the first complete collected edition of Shakespeare’s plays, published in 1623, seven years after his death. Compiled by two of Shakespeare’s fellow actors, it preserves 36 of Shakespeare’s plays. And how does this concern Portlanders? Because Portland Public Library and its exhibit partners Maine Humanities Council and USM Libraries were selected as the Maine tour location. So Joe thinks you should take some time to stop into our favorite local library and check out this piece of history!
